Carroll County: Wildlife in the Woods
Scott Schaeffer, IDNR Wildlife Biologist, will host a tour on his 60 acre farm at 1:00 pm on Sept. 24th. The tour is sponsored by the Northwest Illinois Forestry Association and is free and open to the public.
The tour will feature tree plantings from 2003 through 2010 as well as timber stand improvement and crop tree release practices on his 28 acres of woodland. Other practices to be seen include a field windbreak, native grasses and forbs, and wildlife food plots.
Mr. Schaeffer will also discuss deer problems with tree seedlings emphasizing what works and what does not work.
The tour is an easy walking tour on mowed paths.
To get to the tour site at 14797 Law Road, Savanna, IL, take Route 78 north from Mt. Carroll 2 miles and turn left on Elizabeth Road. Follow Elizabeth Road about 5 miles to Davis Road ( one quarter mile west of the Plum River bridge ). Turn left on Davis Road and travel one mile to Law Road. Take Law Road to the left and travel three quarters of a mile to the third house on the left.
