Forest Health & Ecology

Illinois forests are dynamic ecosystems that provide clean air and water, wildlife habitat, recreation, timber, and many other benefits. Understanding how forests function—and the challenges they face—is an important part of being a good woodland steward.

Forest health is more than the condition of individual trees. A healthy forest is a functioning ecosystem with a diversity of tree species, ages, and structures that can respond to insects, diseases, invasive species, weather, and other stresses.

Understanding Your Woods

Forest health and ecology are influenced by many interconnected factors, including:

  • Tree species and diversity

  • Forest age and structure

  • Soils and site conditions

  • Water resources

  • Wildlife and plant communities

  • Insects, diseases, and invasive species

  • Weather and climate

  • Past and current land management

Understanding these relationships can help landowners recognize changes in their woods and make informed management decisions.

Challenges Facing Illinois Forests

Illinois forests face a variety of challenges, including invasive species, pests and diseases, habitat fragmentation, changes in forest structure and regeneration, extreme weather, and other environmental stresses.

IDNR's Forests and Woodlands Campaign identifies priorities that include improving forest structure, supporting native species and regeneration, protecting and connecting forest habitat, monitoring forest health threats, and encouraging sustainable management on private lands.

The Illinois Forest Action Plan provides additional information about statewide forest conditions, threats, and strategies for maintaining healthy and sustainable forests.

Managing for Forest Health

There is no single definition of a healthy forest, and every woodland is different. Good management starts with understanding your property and identifying your goals. Whether you are interested in timber, wildlife, recreation, conservation, or a combination of these, understanding forest ecology can help you make decisions that support healthy and resilient forests.

Landowners can also seek assistance through the IDNR Forestry Assistance Program, which provides technical assistance to private forest landowners and promotes forest health, wildlife habitat, sustainable forests, and restored ecological processes.
