Webinar: Controlling Invasive Species through Collaboration and Communication

  • 12/04/2013
  • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
  • Internet
Presented by Karla Gage, the River to River CWMA Coordinator.  The River to River Cooperative Weed Management Area (CWMA) was established in 2006.  The CWMA is grant funded and project driven and seeks to address the invasive species needs of private land owners and 13 federal and state agencies, universities and other non-profits, through education and awareness, organization and capacity building, coordinated control efforts, and research in applied methods.  Landowners and CWMA partners provide a network to address conservation needs within a region that contains diverse wildlife habitats and high biodiversity; and CWMA initiatives seek to compliment and build upon current agency programs through collaboration, while also seeking to identify new partners.  The CWMA facilitates work across boundaries and on-the-ground control through volunteer workdays, landowner cost-share programs, and workshops to provide technical assistance in invasive plant identification and control to landowners, contractors, and agency staff.  This webinar will elaborate upon the successes of the past year’s initiatives and highlight future directions for the CWMA.

At the end of 2012, Karla Gage joined Shawnee Resource Conservation & Development Area, Inc. as the River to River CWMA Coordinator.  She graduated in May 2013 with a Ph.D. in plant biology, focused in weed ecology, from the Department of Plant Biology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where her dissertation work examined the ecology of an economically important herbicide-resistant weed.  She is a member of the Illinois Invasive Plant Species Council, serves on the board of the Southern Chapter of the Illinois Native Plant Society, and is a member of the Ecological Society of America.
