Webinar: Basic Winter Tree Identification
When
02/19/2013
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location
Internet
Trees without leaves
While winter is one of the best times to improve your trees, it's difficult to identify trees without their leaves. Yet, the work that you do out in the cold should be directed at the trees that you want to keep. Join us for this webinar on identifying trees during the winter months. This subject is broad, has been taught as an entire semester course in college, and usually takes one day of indoor and outdoor sessions. However, University of Illinois Extension Forester Jay Hayek promises to
condense the basics into this one hour webinar.
Once you understand the most basic botanical structures, as seen in winter--the twigs, bark and fruit--identification becomes much easier. If you are interested in woody plants and want to hone your identification skills, join us. The webinar is provided for free; it will only cost you one hour of your time and might save you from making mistakes.
The Presenter
Jay Hayek is the state extension forestry specialist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; he has served in this role since January 2006. Jay provides forestry-related education and outreach to forest landowners, natural resource professionals, loggers, and various segments of the state’s $3.0+ billion wood products industry.
Jay received his bachelor’s degree in forestry from the University of Illinois and his master’s degree in forest resources (silviculture) from the University of Idaho. In addition to his full-time position, Jay is also a doctoral candidate studying forest soils within the Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has taught several undergraduate courses at U of I, including Forest Ecology Field Studies and Principles of Ecosystem Management.
