A demonstration of thinning and pruning an uneven-aged oak/hickory woodland will be held at the Carol Bryant Timber Farm,
7841 S. Panther Creek Road, Mt. Olive, Illinois
, starting at 10 A.M. Directions are below.
This event is sponsored by the Illinois Forestry Association. Dan Schmoker, retired IDNR administrator and IFA directer, will conduct the workshop for the purpose of providing enough light for the survival of the young white oaks in an area dominated by 60-100 year-old black, white, and post oaks. The first round of thinning of the sassafras understory has been done in some spots. Carol applied for NRCS-EQIP cost share money for timber-stand improvement.
Sandwiches and bottled water will be provided to those who complete the free registration. Bring your own bug spray. This event is free and open to the public. Contact Carol Bryant for more details at 618/444-3864.
Directions to Carol Bryant’s Timber - GPS: 39º06’23.9”N-89º45’34.4”W
1) Southbound on I-55, exit at Litchfield and make a right (west) onto IL Rte 16 and travel 1.0 mi to County Line Road. There is a camping sign pointing left (south). Travel on County Line Road south for 0.5 mi; turn right (west) onto Hornesby Road, 1.0 mi; turn left (south) onto Litchfield Trail & travel 3 miles. Before you go up over the interstate there is a road to the right called East Panther Creek Road. Take E. Panther Creek to the right (west) for 1.7 mi and follow it south to become S. Panther Creek & travel 0.7 mi further to my mailbox. My driveway is the second one after the oil wells. The number on my box (it’s green) is 7841 and my neighbor’s box is 7845 (it’s silver). The blacktop makes a sharp left-hand turn and mine is the only corner with 2 boxes. Turn right onto the gravel road at the mailboxes, cross the creek, come up the hill and you will see the Bryant sign pointing straight west toward the trees. Follow the road between the fields -- my house is way back in the timber to the southwest. It’s 0.8 mi to my house from the mailboxes. See the GPS above or call: 618/444-3864.
2) Northbound on I-55, exit at Mount Olive/Benld/White City and make a right (east) onto IL Rte 138 and travel east for a couple hundred feet to Old US 66. Turn left (north) before the Sunset Restaurant and follow Old US 66 1.5 mi north to the second cross-over road named Mt. Olive Road. Turn left (west). It’s 0.4 mi to Lake Ka-Ho Road. Turn left and follow Lake Ka-Ho Road 0.7 mi, up and over the interstate to the first right-hand turn, Fellin Drive. Make a second immediate right (north) onto South Panther Creek Road. Two miles from the Fellin Drive corner is a sharp right-hand corner with 2 mailboxes. My box is green and has the number 7841. Travel straight ahead (west) onto the gravel road at the mailboxes, cross the creek, come up the hill and you will see the Bryant sign pointing straight west toward the trees. Follow the road between the fields -- my house is way back in the timber to the southwest. It’s 0.8 mi to my house from the mailboxes. If you pass the oil wells, turn around as you have gone too far. See the GPS above or call: 618/444-3864.
