DuPage County Forest Preserve Tour  Registration

This tour will be held on June 23rd, 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Please park in the horse trailer parking lot. There should be plenty of parking spaces at this time of day.
Directions from nearby major roads: From the intersection of I-355 and 75th Street, go west on 75th Street. In about 2 miles, take a left turn at Greene Rd. heading south. After you pass 79th Street, drive another 0.25 miles and look for the parking lot on your right-hand side. This is our meeting location.
STOP:  We will tour the tornado damage area at Green Valley Forest Preserve in Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. On June 20, 2021 an EF-3 tornado touched down in the DuPage County communities of Naperville, Darien, and Woodridge. Dozens of homes in the area were damaged. In addition, approximately 10 acres of remnant oak woodland at Greene Valley were heavily impacted by the tornado.

The tour will show pictures of the aftermath and we will discuss the FPDDC recovery efforts at the site. In addition, the event presented a unique opportunity for research since there exists two tree-demography study plots in the affected woodland – one impacted directly by the tornado and the other relatively untouched. The FPDDC will discuss in greater detail how we will continue to monitor tree-demography in these plots in the future. We will also briefly mention research initiatives by Dr. Frederic Miller and a separate study by INHS. If we have time at the end, we will visit one of our Oak Canopy Gap project locations which is nearby.
