Managing for the Understory, sponsored by the Illinois Forestry Association, will be held at DuPage County Forest Preserve District’s (DPCFPD) Waterfall Glen, near Interstate 55 and Lemont Road from 2 pm until 5 pm. Scott Kobal, Ecologist for the DPCFPD and instructor at Morton's Arboretum, will lead the tour and discuss long-term monitoring of forest plots. The management of these plots has varied from none to extensive, and Scott will discuss the management regimen’s effect on ambient light levels which increase floral diversity and oak regeneration. Scott will also explain the importance of understory diversity to wildlife. This event is free and available for IFA members only. Because of the sensitivity of the site, the group will park at a nearby lot and carpool to the site. Therefore, an attendee count is needed before final logistics can be confirmed. So, IFA members wanting to attend should reserve a place with Dick Pouzar by May 10th. His contact information is available under "Board of Directors".
This event was originally scheduled for May 18th, but the forecasted thunderstorms forced this re-scheduling.
